The Energy Networks Association (ENA) has announced that electricity network operators (ENOs) have removed 10GW of “zombie” projects from the connections queue. These projects, characterized as stalled or speculative schemes, were preventing viable renewables projects from progressing.

The ENA’s Strategic Connections Group, which brings together ENOs, government, and Ofgem, has been working to improve grid connections. The group’s efforts have focused on three areas, resulting in the removal of 10GW of zombie projects. This achievement has freed up vital grid capacity, allowing for more efficient and effective connections.

The removal of these projects is a significant step forward in addressing the issue of zombie projects, which have been a major obstacle to the development of new renewable energy projects. By clearing out these stalled or speculative schemes, the ENA‘s Strategic Connections Group has helped to accelerate the connection process and make it easier for new projects to come online.

The ENA’s efforts have been welcomed by industry experts, who see the removal of zombie projects as a crucial step in unlocking the UK’s renewable energy potential. However, some have also noted that the issue of zombie projects is a symptom of a larger problem with the connection queue, which requires further reform.
