USA, Texas: Entergy Texas has announced plans for a $1 B transmission line upgrade to strengthen power supply and storm resilience in Southeast Texas.

The project will see 90 km (49 mi) of new 500 kV lines built between Hardin County and Jefferson County. These lines will connect to the Cypress Substation and are designed to handle higher capacity while withstanding severe weather.

The proposed design features thicker conductors and structures between 32 and 42 m (105 and 140 ft) tall, with spans ranging from 245 to 365 m (800 to 1,200 ft) between poles. The upgraded lines aim to deliver more power to the region’s growing population and better resist damage from high winds.

Entergy says the goal is to “build back better” by replacing older infrastructure with more resilient systems as storms become more frequent and intense.

Once operational, the project could also support new generation facilities, including a potential power plant in Port Arthur that would be connected to the upgraded network.

The route proposal is now with the Public Utility Commission of Texas for review. If approved, construction is scheduled to finish in 2028.

The company says this investment is part of a wider strategy to modernise the grid and reduce the risk of extended outages during extreme weather, ensuring a more reliable supply for homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure across the region.
