UK, London: Heathrow Airport has returned to normal operations two days after a fire at a substation caused a power cut, forcing over 1,000 flight cancellations on 21 March.

Flights resumed on 22 March, with over 250,000 passengers passing through the airport. While some flights faced minor delays on 23 March, operations remained stable.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband has ordered an investigation into the outage, and former Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly will lead an internal review of Heathrow’s crisis response.

The airport apologised for the disruption and emphasised its focus on passenger service. Counterterrorism officers from the Metropolitan police initially led an investigation but later ruled out suspicious activity, leaving London Fire Brigade to examine the electrical failure.

Heathrow, Europe’s busiest airport with nearly 84 million passengers in 2024, will review its crisis management strategy to improve future resilience.
