Kenya: The Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) has energized the 28 km, 132 kV Awendo–Isebania (Masaba) transmission line, marking a significant step toward improving electricity reliability across Migori County and the wider South Nyanza region.
Implemented under the Kenya Power Transmission Expansion Project (KPTEP), the initiative aims to expand electricity access in underserved areas. In addition to the new line, the project includes the construction of a 132 kV substation at Isebania (Masaba) and the extension of the existing 132 / 33 kV Awendo substation. The infrastructure was built by China Aerospace Construction Group Co., Ltd (CACGC) with funding support from the Government of Kenya and the EXIM Bank of China, at a total cost of $10.2 M (Ksh1.32 B).
The new bulk supply point at Masaba will directly serve the towns of Isebania, Migori, and Kehancha, replacing a previously overstretched 33 / 11 kV distribution line. The upgrade is expected to significantly reduce power outages, improve voltage stability, and enhance power quality for key institutions.
KETRACO Managing Director Dr. Eng. John Mativo described the development as transformative:
“By introducing a new bulk supply point at Masaba, we are significantly reducing line losses and improving voltage stability. This is a game-changer for Migori and the greater South Nyanza,” he stated.
Power to the line is supplied from the upgraded Awendo substation, which is fed by both hydroelectric power from the Sondu plant and geothermal energy from Olkaria – ensuring a stable and sustainable energy mix to support residential, industrial, and commercial needs.
