UK, London: A major fire that erupted on 29 April at an electricity substation and spread to a nearby residential building in north-west London has now been brought under control, according to the London Fire Brigade (LFB).

The incident began around 5:30 am BST on Aberdeen Place in Maida Vale, where flames quickly reached the roof of a block of flats. Around 80 people were safely evacuated from the area.

While no injuries have been reported, residents were advised to keep the windows and doors shut as thick, grey smoke blanketed the neighborhood.

UK Power Networks attributed the incident to a “fault in a piece of equipment” at the substation. The site, however, remains operational and the electricity supply has not been disrupted.

More than 100 firefighters battled the blaze, described by LFB Assistant Commissioner Patrick Goulbourne as “technically challenging” to put out. A major incident was declared at 8:26 am and officially ended at 10:53 am as the situation came under control.

An environmental adviser remains on-site monitoring air quality, and crews are continuing operations to fully extinguish the affected transformer.
