France, Saint-Nazaire / Germany: A ceremony at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire has marked the completion of two offshore substations for the Nordseecluster wind project in the German North Sea. The project is being developed by RWE (51%) and Norges Bank Investment Management (49%).
Each topside measures around 40 m in length and 22 m in height. One weighs about 1,800 t, while the other reaches roughly 2,500 t. Both structures will leave Saint-Nazaire by the end of the month and travel by barge for around eight days to their site, some 50 km north of the island of Juist. Their foundations are already in place.
The substations will gather electricity produced by the wind turbines, raise the voltage and transmit the power to the grid operator’s converter station before it is sent ashore. They will also collect operational data and allow remote monitoring and control from land.
Offshore works for Nordseecluster A are progressing as planned. Foundation installation was completed at the end of last year, cable laying is under way and installation of 44 turbines is scheduled to begin in summer 2026. The 660 MW phase is due to be fully commissioned in early 2027.
Nordseecluster B will follow from 2029, adding 900 MW from 60 turbines. Once complete, the 1.6 GW cluster is expected to generate enough green electricity to supply around 1.6 million German households.
