USA, North Dakota / Miinesota: Minnkota Power Cooperative is leading the charge in rural energy reliability with a major $60 M infrastructure enhancement, backed by a federal Rural Utilities Service (RUS) loan. This investment reinforces Minnkota’s commitment to delivering dependable and affordable power to over 153,000 consumers across eastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota.

The funding supports 40 transmission upgrades and 18 generation projects, including vital maintenance at the Milton R. Young Unit 1 coal facility. With over 3,300 miles of transmission lines and 265 substations, Minnkota is upgrading its aging infrastructure to withstand extreme temperatures and meet growing energy demands.

“These projects are foundational for long-term reliability,” said Kay Schraeder, Vice President and CFO. “This industry requires big investments, and affordable, long-term financing is essential for cooperatives like ours.”

In 2024 alone, 40 miles of transmission lines were rebuilt. Most of the larger projects are expected to be completed by 2025. Beyond physical upgrades, Minnkota is investing in smart technology through its distribution automation program, enabling faster outage response and enhanced grid visibility.

With increasing demand from traditional farms to high-tech data centers, Minnkota is building for the future. “This is about strengthening our system today and preparing it for tomorrow,” Schraeder added.
