USA, Pennsylvania: The Mitsubishi Electric Corporation’s US subsidiary Mitsubishi Electric Power Products, headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, will invest about $86 million in advanced switchgear production and power electronics. This is driven by the growing demand for transmission and distribution grid products as the country moves toward renewable energy and decarbonization goals. Combined with the investment in a factory in Japan, the Mitsubishi Electric Group’ total investments amount to $110 million.
Mitsubishi Electric Power Products will build a 160000 square foot Advanced Switchgear Factory in Western Pennsylvania, the company’s first new manufacturing facility in over a decade. The factory will initially focus on the production of vacuum and gas circuit breakers. As it scales its operations, it will transition to mostly manufacturing vacuum circuit breakers, aligning with the company’s aim to meet the evolving needs of utilities and support the nation’s decarbonization efforts. Upon reaching full capacity, the facility will employ more than 200 full-time workers. The company will expand and upgrade its facilities in Warrendale, PA, investing in power electronics and test labs. It will implement advanced software and automation technologies at the new switchgear factory and within its existing switchgear operations.
Mitsubishi Electric will also invest in its Transmission & Distribution Systems Center in Japan to improve its productivity of switchgear. The aim is to meet the growing demand for electricity. The Group will further contribute to stable power supply by boosting its production capabilities and supply chains in energy system business.
Tricia Breeger, President and CEO of Mitsubishi Electric Power Products, said, “By investing in this state-of-the-art switchgear factory, we will better serve our customers, and we will significantly advance the production of critical components that strengthen both distribution and transmission grids while driving new technologies forward in support of the nation’s decarbonization initiatives.”
