Australia, New England, Armidale: In a move to reduce disruption to local landowners and the Boorolong community, EnergyCo and Origin Energy have announced plans to relocate a key energy hub within the New England Renewable Energy Zone (REZ).

Following community consultation, the northern energy hub, a major substation for collecting and transmitting electricity from renewable sources, will shift from private farmland to Warrane, an Origin-owned site northwest of Armidale, also planned for the Northern Tablelands Wind Farm.

By co-locating the substation with the wind project, the change is expected to reduce construction impacts and limit the need for transmission lines across private properties. Origin noted that the site aligns well with NSW Government Transmission Guidelines and EnergyCo’s planning principles, minimizing environmental, access, and heritage concerns.

EnergyCo emphasised that the change was made possible through ongoing engagement with landowners, and such dialogue will continue as the corridor for new transmission lines is finalised.

The shift marks the start of a long-term collaboration between Origin and EnergyCo in delivering the New England REZ, aimed at supplying affordable, clean power to the grid.
