USA, New York, New York City: Con Edison is wrapping up a major underground transmission project in Brooklyn, set to enhance electricity reliability and capacity in the borough.

The new 1.6 km (1 mi) line, stretching between the Gowanus and Greenwood substations, will increase local power delivery by 33 %, enough to run 300,000 window A/C units, 400,000 refrigerators, or 250,000 toaster ovens simultaneously.

“This is a major boost to our ability to meet growing demand,” said Johnny Price, the project manager.

The $505 M investment is part of Con Edison’s Reliable Clean City initiative, a program designed to prepare New York for increased electricity use from EV charging, electric heating, and other clean technologies.

Alongside a similar upgrade underway in Staten Island, the Brooklyn line will also support the transition to cleaner energy by improving transmission capacity from upstate renewable sources, reducing the city’s reliance on fossil fuel generation.

The Brooklyn transmission line is on track to be fully operational by summer, bringing both resilience and cleaner energy to one of New York City’s most power-hungry boroughs.
