China: Chinese cable manufacturer Orient Cable (NBO) has secured two major offshore wind export cable contracts, further strengthening its position in high-voltage subsea power transmission.
On April 14, the company announced it had won an EPCI contract—alongside China Southern Power Grid—for a 500 kV extra-high voltage AC (EHVAC) subsea cable system. The project, located in Guangdong Province and developed by Energy China, will transmit 1 GW of power over a 92 km route using 3×800 mm² cables. The scope includes design, manufacturing, transport, installation, and testing. Though unnamed, this marks the longest 500 kV EHVAC offshore route in China to date.
In a separate announcement, Orient Cable revealed another contract win from China Southern Power Grid involving a record-breaking 118 km offshore route. The 2 GW project will utilize a 500 kV HVDC 2500 mm² subsea cable system—the longest of its kind in China.
These milestones follow NBO’s successful deployment of the world’s first 500 kV HVAC subsea cable in offshore wind and highlight the company’s leadership in both HVAC and HVDC technologies. NBO has also contributed to international offshore wind projects, including the Netherlands’ Hollandse Kust West Beta and Poland’s 1.5 GW Baltica 2 project for Ørsted and PGE.
