India, Tamil Nadu, Chennai: Chennai’s electricity supply is set to become more stable with the upcoming 230 kV substation at Panjetty in Tiruvallur district nearing completion. Built at a cost of $30 M (₹256.45 crore), the project is about 75 % finished, with civil works and control room setup nearly 95 % done, according to Tantransco officials.

Following the directive from Electricity Minister V. Senthilbalaji to speed up infrastructure projects, Tangedco Chairman and Managing Director J. Radhakrishnan inspected the site and urged workers to ensure the facility is operational by August 2025.

Once completed, the Panjetty substation will be linked to 400 kV substations at Manali, Thervoy Kandigai (under construction), and Alamathi, enhancing power distribution. Currently, Panjetty has a 110 kV substation, but the addition of the 230 kV unit will significantly improve load management in Gummidipoondi, Ponneri, and parts of Chennai, said Chennai North TNPDCL Superintendent Engineer Veerapandian.

Meanwhile, TNPDCL has instructed field officers to clear dry vegetation from all 1,754 substations across Tamil Nadu to prevent fire hazards during summer.
