SF6 has been widely used in medium and high-voltage switchgear due to its efficiency and non-toxicity. However, its high global warming potential (GWP) is driving phase-out. Martin Sweeney of Lucy Electric discusses the shift towards using fresh air as an insulating medium.
Why SF6 Was Used
SF6 provides high dielectric strength, enabling smaller ring main units and replacing harmful compounds in oil-filled circuit breakers. It is also effective at interrupting large current loads.
Environmental Impact of SF6
SF6 is 22,800 times more potent than CO2 over 100 years and lasts much longer in the atmosphere (3,200 years vs. methane’s 12 years). Although present in smaller volumes, SF6 levels have been rising, leading to regulatory pressure. The EU will ban medium-voltage switchgear using SF6 from 2026, with similar measures expected in Britain.
Introducing the Sabre EcoTec
Lucy Electric’s Sabre EcoTec uses synthetic air instead of SF6 for medium-voltage switchgear, offering zero GWP. It maintains the benefits of existing Sabre units, such as size, cost, and application, without requiring redesign of switch rooms or substations.
Design Innovations
The Sabre EcoTec employs vacuum-bottle technology adapted for compact size, avoiding increased air pressure to minimize maintenance. This design ensures minimal physical impact and easy installation on existing Sabre plinths.
Sustainability Strategy
Lucy Electric is committed to reducing its environmental impact. The Sabre EcoTec is part of a broader strategy that includes using solar power, improving energy consumption, and increasing Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions reporting. In 2023, the company reduced its carbon intensity by 13.6%.
Conclusion
The transition from SF6 to fresh air in switchgear is crucial for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Lucy Electric’s Sabre EcoTec exemplifies this shift, aligning with global sustainability goals and regulatory changes. The company’s broader sustainability efforts reinforce its commitment to environmental stewardship and innovative solutions.
