Siemens Drives Sustainable and Future-Proof Power Distribution Across Norway

"We are proud to be the first company in Norway to only use SF6-free switchgear across our grid." -Vidar Kristoffersen

Siemens Smart Infrastructure has signed a six-year agreement with Norgesnett to deliver SF6 gas-free switchgear, specifically the 8DJH 24–blue GIS switchgear, and compact substations.

Takeaway

Norgesnett is Norway’s most efficient grid operator, serving 102,000 customers in Norway.

Siemens’ technology is leading sustainable energy distribution. The agreement with Norgesnett marks a significant step in implementing SF6-free switchgear solutions across national grids.

Gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) type 8DJH Switchgear uses Clean Air, composed of natural-origin gases, and is free of fluorinated and PFAS gases, with a global warming potential (GWP) below 1. It combines Clean Air insulation with Siemens’ vacuum-interrupter technology, reducing its carbon footprint.

Statements from Leadership

Stephan May, CEO of Electrification and Automation, Siemens Smart Infrastructure: “This agreement with Norgesnett signifies a crucial step forward as we work together to implement SF6-free switchgear solutions across national grids.”

Vidar Kristoffersen, CEO of Norgesnett: “The framework agreement with Siemens gives us predictable access to critically important materials and equipment, boosting our environmental and sustainability efforts. We are proud to be the first company in Norway to only use SF6-free switchgear across our grid.”

Environmental Impact

Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) is a synthetic gas with a global warming potential 24,300 times higher than CO2. Traditionally used in medium-voltage switchgear, it is being phased out due to its environmental impact.

By adopting Siemens’ SF6-free switchgear, Norgesnett will save approximately 1,200 tonnes of CO2 over the product’s lifetime.

Conclusion

Siemens’ sustainable switchgear is driving energy transformation, with Clean Air technology being key to sustainable and reliable grids. The collaboration between Siemens and Norgesnett exemplifies a commitment to environmental stewardship and future-proof energy solutions.
