Denmark / Germany: Siemens Energy has secured a landmark contract from transmission system operators (TSOs) Energinet and 50Hertz to deliver four converter stations and supporting infrastructure for the Bornholm Energy Island project. The turnkey order includes design, transport, installation, testing, and commissioning, with completion targeted by the mid-2030s.
Two converter stations and a HVAC station will be built at Aakirkeby on Bornholm. The remaining stations will be constructed at Lindehøj on Zealand and in Kemnitz, Germany.
Bornholm’s role as a regional energy hub will see electricity from future offshore wind farms raised to 525 kV DC before transmission via submarine and onshore cables to Denmark and Germany. The system will provide up to 2 GW of capacity to Germany and 1.2 GW to Zealand.
50Hertz CEO Stefan Kapferer welcomed the resolution of regulatory issues, including liability guarantees for international grid connections: “Such a guarantee is the prerequisite for a successful tender for the wind farm areas off Bornholm and, more generally, for efficient offshore cross-linking in the North and Baltic Seas.”
The German Federal Cabinet’s amendment of the Energy Industry Act (EnWG) also enables the planned Ostwind 4 project, connecting additional Danish offshore wind capacity to Germany’s grid.
The total cost of the Bornholm Energy Island project is estimated at $8.2 B (€7 B). The European Union has contributed $753 M (€645 M) under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) programme, primarily to reduce Danish investment costs.
Energinet has already signed a contract with NKT to deliver the HVDC cable system linking Bornholm to Zealand.
