USA, New York. New York: Swedish construction giant Skanska has secured a $67 M contract to build a new substation on Governors Island, New York City, as part of major upcoming developments on the island.
The contract, signed with the Trust for Governors Island, covers both preconstruction and construction services for a 27 kV enclosed substation. It will be officially recorded in Skanska’s US order bookings for Q3 2025.
According to Skanska, the substation will power multiple future projects, including a public school scheduled to open in September 2027, and the New York Climate Exchange – a 37,000 m² research and education hub focused on climate solutions.
Construction is expected to begin later in 2025, with completion set for 2027.
This contract follows several recent wins for Skanska in the US. Just last month, the company secured a $69 M deal to build a 7,400 m², three-storey health sciences facility for Durham Tech Community College in North Carolina, with construction starting this month and wrapping up by November 2027.
In another major project, Skanska was selected by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to work on the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge in New York. Valued at approximately $249 M (SEK2.5 B), the project includes installing a main cable dehumidification system and acoustic monitoring to enhance bridge longevity and safety.
These contracts reflect Skanska’s expanding footprint in the US infrastructure and public sector markets.
