UK, England, London: Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) is set to begin a $7.2 M (£5.4 M) enhancement of its Southfield Road substation in Ealing later this month. The upgrade is part of a broader effort to modernise West London’s electricity infrastructure and support future energy demands.

Scheduled for completion by summer 2026, the initiative aims to increase network capacity while advancing local decarbonisation goals and economic development. Once complete, the project is expected to benefit approximately 20,000 homes and businesses in the area.

Two new high-performance transformers, manufactured offsite by OCU Group, will be installed in phases within the existing substation boundary to limit disruption. Work will begin with the demolition of outdated structures, followed by major electrical upgrades in the autumn.

Matthew Carter, SSEN Project Manager, noted, “This upgrade is essential for meeting the region’s growing energy needs. The new equipment will improve both safety and capacity, helping us transition to low-carbon technologies.”

Senior Project Manager Joseph Hurling added that the upgrade is part of a larger $100 M (£75 M) investment programme in West London: “Modernising our substations and distribution systems enables us to integrate more renewable energy and deliver a reliable, flexible supply for years to come.”
