China, Shaoxing: Ahead of the high-demand summer season, State Grid has completed a major expansion at the Jiangbin 500 kV substation in Shaoxing, Zhejiang province. On 27 May, the newly installed fourth main transformer was successfully energised, marking the start of trial operations.
This upgrade adds 1 million kVA of capacity to the substation – the largest of its kind in the province. The project also expanded 500 kV and 220 kV feeders and installed two 60 MVA capacitor banks to strengthen voltage support. These improvements are expected to meet the increasing electricity needs of Shaoxing, Ningbo, and the fast-growing industrial areas around Hangzhou Bay.
The expansion project adhered to the high standards of the Jiangbin substation’s original build, a recipient of the National Quality Engineering Awards Golden Award. The project team implemented strict quality and safety management, achieving zero accidents, defects, or delays, despite challenges such as typhoons and labour shortages.
State Grid Shaoxing Power Supply Company coordinated technical teams across disciplines to ensure safe and efficient commissioning. Efforts included minimising 220 kV outages through precise scheduling and synchronising work with nearby projects, ultimately compressing outage time by 12 days.
The upgraded substation will enhance power grid stability, ensure continuous power to local industries and residents, and support long-term regional energy planning.
