Canada, Alberta, Lloydminster: A deliberate shooting at an Atco substation in Lloydminster led to a significant power outage, oil spill, and damages estimated at $1.1 M, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).

The incident occurred on 19 May in the city’s southwest. Investigators say the substation was intentionally targeted when a firearm was discharged at the facility, striking an oil tank.

The impact triggered a power outage that left more than 8,400 residents without electricity for nearly five hours and caused 20,000 l of oil to spill, prompting an urgent environmental response.

Authorities confirmed the act was not accidental and are treating it as a criminal offense. The estimated damage includes both infrastructure repairs and environmental cleanup costs.

“This was a calculated act that resulted in significant disruption and environmental risk,” the RCMP noted in a statement. They are now appealing for public assistance in identifying those responsible.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is urged to contact Lloydminster RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
