India, Tamil Nadu: To address the steadily rising demand for electricity in Tamil Nadu, the state’s electricity transmission corporation has announced plans to build 12 new substations across 9 districts, including Chennai, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu, at an estimated cost of $140 M (Rs1192 crore).

The proposed plan includes one 400 kV substation, with the remaining 11 substations designed at 110 kV capacity.

A significant development is the establishment of a substation in Hosur, in Krishnagiri district, on a vast 810-ha (2000-acre) government-owned site. So far, five potential locations have been reviewed, with two already confirmed. Efforts to identify more suitable sites are ongoing.

The district-level plan includes two substations each in Chengalpattu and Namakkal, while single substations will be set up in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Erode, Madurai, Salem, and Thanjavur, all with 110 kV capacity.

A senior electricity department official stated that once site selection is complete, a detailed project assessment will follow, leading to formal government approval and the start of construction.
