USA, New York, New York: The Trump administration has reversed its decision to block a major offshore wind project that will supply power to New York, Governor Kathy Hochul announced on 19 May.
The Empire Wind 1 project, which had been temporarily stopped by Interior Secretary Doug Burgum over claims of inadequate review under the Biden administration, is now back on track. Hochul shared the update in a post on X, stating that her collaboration with the current administration had saved the project.
Governor Kathy Hochul said that Empire Wind 1 would deliver 1,500 union jobs and power 500,000 homes with wind energy. She added that she had been working with President Donald Trump to save the project and had learned that they had been successful.
The Trump administration has long been critical of wind energy, with early actions including a freeze on offshore wind leasing. The recent stop-work order was seen as a significant escalation, threatening a project already underway.
Despite previous statements opposing offshore wind – citing aesthetic impacts, wildlife concerns, and even false health claims – Trump has also called for increased domestic energy production amid a declared national energy emergency.
Empire Wind 1 is expected to deliver 810 MW of clean energy to Brooklyn, enough to power half a million homes, according to project developers.
