Turkistan launches $310 M solar power project

A 300 MW solar plant begins construction in Turkistan, creating 500 jobs and boosting renewable energy and regional investment appeal.

Kazahstan, Turkistan: Construction of a 300 MW solar power plant has officially begun in the Orungay district of Sauran, Turkistan region, according to Qazinform News Agency. The project is among the largest renewable energy initiatives in the region, aiming to expand green energy, increase energy capacity, and create new employment opportunities.

Governor Nuralkhan Kusherov attended the capsule-laying ceremony and highlighted the strategic importance of the project. He said it will support economic diversification, improve investment attractiveness, and generate clean energy for the region. The plant is expected to involve nearly $310 M (160 B tenge) in investment and create around 500 jobs for local residents.

Via video link, Nurlan Zhakupov, Chairman of Samruk-Kazyna National Welfare Fund, affirmed the Fund’s ongoing support for renewable energy projects, noting that the new solar plant will strengthen Kazakhstan’s energy security.

China’s Ambassador to Kazakhstan, Han Chunlin, described the initiative as a strong example of Kazakhstan-China cooperation, emphasising the role of joint efforts in promoting green energy. Ni Zhen, President of China Energy Group, highlighted the project’s importance for the national energy system and international collaboration. Lin Xiaodan, Chairman of China Energy Engineering Overseas Investment Company, stressed the technical, environmental, and financial aspects, confirming the company’s readiness to deliver the project on schedule and to high standards.

Once operational, the plant will increase the region’s share of renewable energy, support industrial expansion, and attract further investment, contributing to sustainable and environmentally safe development. The Turkistan region is also planning to expand water-saving technologies across 400,000 ha, reinforcing its commitment to modern, sustainable infrastructure.
