UK: The Eastern Green Link 4 (EGL4) project has confirmed $4 B (£3 B) in key supply chain contracts, marking a major step forward in building critical UK energy infrastructure. The move supports economic growth, strengthens energy security, and helps reduce costs caused by grid constraints.
Siemens Energy will provide the HVDC converter stations, while Prysmian will supply subsea and underground electricity cables, following an earlier $2.6 B (£2 B). EGL4 is part of a series of five subsea links along Britain’s east coast, enhancing network resilience and allowing greater renewable energy flow between Scotland and England.
The Siemens Energy contract includes two converter stations, one in Fife and one in Norfolk, converting alternating current into direct current for efficient long-distance electricity transmission. The 2 GW subsea link will stretch around 640 km, primarily undersea, before reconnecting to the onshore grid. By increasing capacity and easing congestion, EGL4 will accelerate the integration of cleaner energy and support growing UK demand.
James Goode, Project Director of Eastern Green Link 4, said: “Confirming £3 billion of contract awards demonstrates the scale and momentum behind Eastern Green Link 4 as we move into delivery. By bringing together the proven expertise of Siemens Energy and Prysmian, we’re building a highly capable UK supply chain to deliver this complex electricity infrastructure project.
Iain Adams, Deputy Project Director of Eastern Green Link 4, said: “Securing the international expertise of Siemens Energy and Prysmian to help us deliver this vital electricity connection is a real project milestone.“
Construction is expected to begin in 2028, with completion in 2033. The project will create skilled jobs and strengthen domestic capabilities, supporting the UK’s transition to a cleaner and more resilient energy system.
