Vietnam: Vietnam’s state utility EVN has completed the construction of a $1 billion transmission line expected to boost supply to the industrialised northern region, which is home to factories for several large multinationals. The 519 km (322.5 mile) line from the central province of Quang Binh to Pho Noi power station outside Hanoi is part of Vietnam’s efforts to avoid power shortages similar to the ones which hit factories and families during heatwaves in recent years.
The line, built in less than a year, could double the power transmission capacity from central Vietnam, where most of the country’s solar and wind farms are located, to the northern regions, bringing it to around 5 GW. The country has ramped up coal imports for power generation this year and is expanding one of its largest hydropower plants in its north, where large investors such as Samsung Electronics, Foxconn and Canon have their factories.
