Xcel Energy’s Clean Energy Leap

With coal retirements looming, Xcel Energy goes all in on thousands of megawatts of new generation.

Xcel Energy is embarking on a significant transformation by investing in thousands of megawatts of new renewable energy generation. This ambitious plan aims to reduce carbon emissions by over 80% by 2030, aligning with the company’s vision for a cleaner energy future.

Key Components of the Plan

Renewable Energy Expansion: Xcel plans to add substantial wind and solar capacity to its grid. By 2030, it will include 3,430 MW of wind energy and 550 MW of grid-scale solar energy. This expansion is part of the Upper Midwest Energy Plan, which serves Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Michigan.
Battery Energy Storage: The company will add 600 MW of battery energy storage, complemented by a 300-MW lithium-ion battery at the Sherco plant site. This will enable the storage of low-cost wind and solar energy for use during peak demand periods.
Nuclear Plant Extensions: Xcel will extend the operational life of its two nuclear plants at Prairie Island and Monticello until the early 2050s. These plants provide a reliable source of carbon-free electricity.
Hydrogen-Capable Natural Gas Plant: A new hydrogen-capable natural gas-fired power plant will be built in Lyon County, Minnesota. This plant will serve as a backup during times when renewable energy output is low, ensuring grid stability.

Impact and Benefits

Carbon Emissions Reduction: The plan is expected to reduce carbon emissions from 2005 levels by more than 80%, potentially reaching up to 88% by 2030.
Economic Growth: The investments will create jobs and stimulate local economies, contributing to community development.
Grid Reliability: The integration of battery storage and clean natural gas will enhance grid resilience, ensuring reliable service for customers.
