Australia, Sydney: An Ausgrid worker has been seriously injured following an electrical explosion at a substation in Terrey Hills, in Sydney’s north.

Emergency services were called shortly after 8.00 am on 8 February, to reports of an explosion at the Ausgrid Terrey Hills Zone Substation on Kamber Road. The site is located opposite the Northern Beaches Rural Fire Service (RFS) headquarters, allowing firefighters to reach the scene within minutes.

On arrival, crews found two workers, one of whom had suffered serious burns to his face. RFS personnel provided immediate first aid to the injured man, aged 47, while multiple NSW Ambulance crews responded, including intensive care paramedics and senior ambulance officers.

Due to the severity of the injuries, the CareFlight Rescue Helicopter was deployed from Westmead and landed at JJ Melbourne Hills Memorial Reserve shortly before 8.30 am. Ausgrid emergency crews also attended to ensure the area was safe for responders.

Fire and Rescue NSW crews from Forestville later arrived to assist, providing specialist hazardous materials support. The cause of the explosion was not immediately known.

Once the aeromedical team arrived, the patient was transferred to the helicopter and flown to Royal North Shore Hospital. He was reported to be in a serious but stable condition.

Ausgrid Group Executive for Field Delivery, Sam Sofi, confirmed the incident occurred on Ausgrid property and posed no ongoing risk to the public. He said the explosion triggered a power outage affecting around 2,000 customers in the Terrey Hills area, but electricity supply has since been fully restored.

NSW Police attended the scene and are conducting inquiries. The incident has been classified as a workplace injury and is expected to be reported to SafeWork NSW for further investigation.
