SP Energy Networks has teamed up with award-winning author-illustrator Emily MacKenzie to create Walter and Skye’s Stormy Night, a children’s storybook designed to help families stay safe during power cuts this winter. While aimed at children under five, the initiative highlights the real-world impact of storm events on electricity networks and the role of operators in maintaining reliable supply.
Over 2,000 copies are being distributed to nurseries, libraries, and playgroups across Central and Southern Scotland, North Wales, Merseyside, and Cheshire, with a free online version available nationwide. The book follows two heroic puppies navigating a storm and blackout, while introducing simple safety tips to keep children and parents prepared.
While uncommon, power cuts can happen during severe weather. A little preparation can make a big difference to comfort and safety. SP Energy Networks recommends:
- Prepare a Storm Kit with a battery-powered or wind-up torch, spare batteries, a power bank, warm clothes, and blankets.
- Keep the national 105 emergency helpline handy to report any power cuts immediately.
- Sign up for the Priority Services Register, a free service for households with children under five, people over 60, those with communication needs, home medical reliance on electricity, long-term health conditions, or anyone needing extra help.
Kendal Morris, Customer Service Director at SP Energy Networks, said: “While power cuts are rare, it is vital that families know how to stay safe. Partnering with Emily MacKenzie allowed us to engage children and parents in a fun, memorable way, while reinforcing practical advice during storm season.”
