Saudi Arabia, Jeddah: Siemens Energy, in partnership with ELSEWEDY ELECTRIC PSP, has delivered the first gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) installation in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East that does not use SF₆, a potent greenhouse gas. The project was carried out at the Jawharat Al Aros Substation in Jeddah under contract with Saudi Electricity Company (SEC).
The deployment of the Blue GIS – 8VN1 technology is part of a broader effort to support Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 goals and transition towards a more sustainable energy infrastructure. The system features zero global warming potential and digital monitoring capabilities that aim to support operational efficiency.
According to the companies, the environmental benefits of this project include the avoidance of 260 kg of SF₆ and the prevention of over 6,100 t of CO₂ equivalent emissions. This reduction is comparable to removing over 1,300 cars from the road for a year or the carbon capture of more than 100,000 tree seedlings over ten years.
The project illustrates ongoing developments in the region’s power infrastructure and highlights cooperation between companies on emissions-reducing technologies. It remains to be seen how widely similar installations will be adopted as regional utilities aim to reduce environmental impact and modernise their networks.
