NEMA Introduces New Standard for Data Centre Energy Storage
The BESS Testing and Performance Measurements Standard aims to establish clear performance expectations.

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has launched the new standard US 80054-2024 to enhance energy storage for data centres.
Key points of the new standard include:
1. It provides consistent methods for assessing key performance specifications of BESS.
2. The standard will help data centre developers and end users make informed decisions about BESS products.
3. It aims to improve reliability, resilience, and economic development in the data centre sector.
The standard comes at a crucial time, as U.S. data centre electricity demand is projected to double or potentially triple by 2030. This increase is largely driven by the growth in AI research and development, which requires substantial computing power.
Patrick Hughes, Senior Vice President of Technical Affairs at NEMA, emphasised the importance of this standard in maintaining U.S. leadership in AI development. He stated that tools like energy storage are essential for creating a reliable electricity supply to power new data centres.
The BESS Testing and Performance Measurements Standard is expected to benefit various stakeholders, including data centre developers, manufacturers, consumers, businesses, utilities, policymakers, researchers, and analysts. By providing standardised performance specifications, it aims to ensure optimal system performance and enhance overall reliability in the data centre industry.
