Nigeria, Lagos: Schneider Electric has launched its RM AirSeT and SM AirSeT medium-voltage pure-air switchgear solutions in West Africa, replacing sulphur hexafluoride (SF₆) with clean air and vacuum interruption. The move represents a major step towards decarbonising regional energy infrastructure while ensuring reliable performance.

The RM AirSeT (ring main unit) and SM AirSeT (modular switchboard) are built for applications in food and beverage, manufacturing, utilities, and municipal networks. Both solutions operate at up to 24 kV, providing safe switching and protection without the need for greenhouse gases.

SF₆, widely used in traditional switchgear, is considered the world’s most potent greenhouse gas. Schneider Electric says one unit released is equivalent to 23,500 kg of CO₂. “This transition is urgent, and we are proud to bring a greener solution to West Africa,” said Adebayo Adeniran, Power Systems Offer Manager at Schneider Electric West Africa.

RM AirSeT features compact, modular design with wireless sensors for monitoring overheating and moisture, smart grid compatibility, and sealed tanks that eliminate gas refills. SM AirSeT offers modular flexibility for secondary distribution, digital monitoring of temperature and wear, and mechanisms rated for up to 10,000 operations.

Both solutions integrate with Schneider’s EcoStruxure IoT platform for predictive maintenance and cybersecurity, extending equipment life by up to 30 % and reducing outages. The company plans to first target key industrial partners before rolling out more broadly across the region.
