USA, Illinois: ComEd, a subsidiary of Exelon Corporation, has completed a $96 M upgrade to its Itasca substation in northern Illinois. The modernisation effort, which began in 2022, is part of a broader $1 B regional infrastructure investment aimed at supporting the Western O’Hare area’s growing energy needs.

The Itasca project includes the installation of large-scale power transformers and gas-insulated switchgear connected to the 345 kV bulk transmission line, increasing overall capacity and grid resilience. According to ComEd, the investment is intended to help manage increasing electrification and mitigate risks posed by extreme weather events.

The project was carried out by Ruiz Construction Systems in collaboration with the Village of Itasca, with an emphasis on reducing disruption to the local community.

Local officials noted the significance of the improvements. Illinois State Representative Jennifer Sanalitro highlighted the importance of grid stability for the state’s economy, while Greg Bedalov, CEO of Choose DuPage, pointed to the role of infrastructure reliability in supporting business activity.

ComEd provides electricity to approximately 4 million customers across northern Illinois. The substation upgrade forms part of a continuing effort to adapt existing infrastructure to shifting power demands and future grid requirements.
