The urban power infrastructure facility represents a significant shift in how utilities integrate critical power infrastructure within densely populated city centres.

The $100 million project, a collaboration between Eversource and Boston Properties (BXP), will be built entirely underground, preserving valuable urban space while meeting growing power demands. This substation will be crucial for supporting Cambridge’s expanding technology and biotech sectors, which require substantial and reliable power supply.

Key Features of the Underground Substation:
– Complete underground construction to maximise land use
– State-of-the-art flood protection systems
– Advanced fire suppression technology
– Enhanced security measures
– Minimal surface-level impact

The facility’s design addresses multiple urban challenges, including flood protection, noise reduction, and aesthetic concerns. By placing the substation underground, the project preserves valuable urban space while providing essential power infrastructure. The surface area will be developed into public space, including a park and community facilities.

This innovative approach to substation design could serve as a model for other cities facing similar challenges in upgrading their power infrastructure while maintaining urban liveability. The project demonstrates how modern engineering solutions can balance technical requirements with community needs.

Construction is scheduled to begin in 2025, with completion expected by 2028. The substation will play a vital role in supporting the region’s growing power demands while setting new standards for urban infrastructure development.
