Dominion Energy has successfully installed 78 monopile foundations and four offshore substation foundations, marking substantial progress in the construction of the largest offshore wind farm in the United States.

Key details:

  1. The project is located 27 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach.
  2. It will have a total capacity of 2.6 gigawatts, enough to power up to 660,000 homes.
  3. The installation of foundations began in June 2023 and was completed in December 2023.
  4. The monopiles are massive structures, ranging from 263 to 298 feet long and weighing up to 1,755 tons each.
  5. The foundations were installed using a specialized vessel called “Charybdis,” the first Jones Act-compliant offshore wind turbine installation vessel in the U.S.
  6. The next phase involves installing transition pieces atop the monopiles, which will support the turbine towers.
  7. Wind turbine installation is scheduled to begin in 2024.
  8. The project is expected to be completed by late 2026.
  9. CVOW represents a $9.8 billion clean energy investment and will create hundreds of local jobs.
  10. The project aligns with Virginia’s goal to generate 100% carbon-free electricity by 2045.

This milestone demonstrates significant progress in the development of offshore wind energy in the United States and highlights Dominion Energy’s commitment to renewable energy and reducing carbon emissions.
