USA, Minnesota, Hibbing: Hibbing Public Utilities (HPU) has commissioned two new substations as part of a $5.8 M modernisation initiative designed to strengthen the city’s electrical grid and improve service reliability for residents and businesses.
The project marks the first phase of HPU’s substation modernisation program, which will replace ageing infrastructure dating back to the 1960s. According to HPU spokesperson Eliot Dixon, the upgrades represent a major milestone in the utility’s efforts to bring its power system into the modern age.
“The old equipment was well beyond its expected service life and couldn’t handle modern requirements,” Dixon said. “By replacing what we can control, we’re building a more resilient system that’s better prepared for storms, wildlife interference, and growing energy demand, ” he concluded.
The new substations, located at the Ansley and First Avenue sites, feature padmount transformers that protect equipment from common causes of outages such as weather and wildlife. HPU says these improvements will reduce failure risks and ensure more consistent service for customers across Hibbing.
Dixon noted that outdated equipment had contributed to previous outages, often compounded by wildlife interference. “The running joke is that the squirrels have it out against the community,” he said. “But the new infrastructure will make us much less vulnerable.”
The substation upgrades were funded through HPU’s capital budget. Phase two of the modernisation project is expected to begin next spring along the Hibbing Beltline near the Super One area, further expanding the city’s power capacity and preparing the grid for future growth.
