USA, Washington, Liberty Lake / Massachusetts, Boston: Itron and Schneider Electric are expanding their collaboration with Microsoft to enhance grid visibility and control, improving reliability and efficiency for utilities.

By integrating Itron’s Grid Edge Intelligence solutions, Schneider Electric’s Digital Grid solutions, and Microsoft’s AI-powered data platform, the partnership will enable real-time insights, optimize energy distribution, and enhance grid resilience.

The collaboration introduces non-wires solutions to address infrastructure constraints, allowing utilities to optimize existing grid capacity by up to 20 % while managing distributed energy resources (DERs) such as solar panels, battery storage, and EV chargers.

Key benefits include Transformer-to-Meter Mapping, improving distribution system load management; State Estimation and Load Flow Accuracy, helping utilities detect grid strain; Volt-VAR Optimization, reducing energy loss; and Local DER Group Management, enhancing planning models for future infrastructure projects.

“With rising electricity demand and increasing DER adoption, utilities need better grid visibility,” said Don Reeves, Itron’s SVP of Outcomes. “This partnership provides real-time insights to modernize outdated grid models.”

The solution, available in North America by late 2025, aims to help utilities digitize, automate, and improve energy management, ensuring long-term grid reliability and efficiency.
