Jiangsu Province Unveils First Fully Indoor 500kV Urban Substation
The Suzhou Yuexi Substation, a key project by State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power Co., Ltd., commenced operations on 29 November 2024.

This innovative substation is designed to meet the growing electricity demands of Suzhou and the broader Yangtze River Delta region. With a transformation capacity of 2 million kilovolt-amperes, it provides a robust solution for the area’s winter power needs.
The substation’s design is a marvel of modern engineering, optimising space usage in urban environments. Occupying a mere 20 mu (approximately 13 square metres), it uses less than half the area typically required for a conventional 500-kilovolt substation. This remarkable space efficiency is achieved through a three-row stacked layout, compressing all electrical equipment—including main transformers and gas-insulated metal-enclosed switchgear—into a single 23-metre-tall building.
Beyond its compact design, the Yuexi substation incorporates several eco-friendly features. Rooftop photovoltaic panels are expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 100 tonnes annually, equivalent to saving more than 40 tonnes of standard coal. Additionally, an integrated rainwater recycling system will conserve approximately 3,300 cubic metres of water each year, used for on-site irrigation and landscaping.
This project demonstrates how modern power infrastructure can be seamlessly integrated into urban landscapes, addressing both spatial constraints and environmental concerns. It sets a new standard for substation design, potentially influencing future developments in densely populated areas worldwide.
