Kenya: Kenya is advancing its electricity transmission infrastructure as part of its 2030 energy masterplan, aiming to connect every county to the national grid and improve supply reliability.
The Kitui–Wote transmission line project, located in the Eastern Region, will create two independent supply sources – from Wote and Kindaruma – enhancing the grid’s N-1 contingency system, which allows uninterrupted operation even if one component fails.
“This project is very important as it will help us achieve and improve the N-1 contingency criterion that ensures supply stability at all times,” said Shem Konga, KETRACO’s Regional Engineer for the Eastern Region.
Antony Musyoka, KETRACO’s General Manager for Project Development Services, said the company’s goal is to connect all 47 counties to the national grid by 2030. The 20-year masterplan includes 8,000 km of transmission lines and 15,000 MVA of new transformation capacity.
Earlier this month, KETRACO completed the Loiyangalani–Suswa 400 kV double circuit transmission line restoration, replacing six collapsed towers and restoring full N-1 contingency. The line now enables transmission of up to 300 MW from the Lake Turkana Wind Power (LTWP) plant, improving national grid stability.
At the commissioning, Cabinet Secretary for Energy Opiyo Wandayi said the project would enhance reliability, attract investment, and ensure consistent electricity access, which is key for economic and industrial growth.
KETRACO stated that the restored line and upcoming Kitui–Wote project will reduce interruptions, strengthen resilience, and accelerate Kenya’s transition to clean, affordable power.
