South Africa, Tshwane: The City of Tshwane has completed a major upgrade to the Rosslyn substation in northern Pretoria, a vital hub for the city’s manufacturing sector.
Key enhancements include the installation of SBV3 switchgear, a new 35 MVA transformer, an additional incomer breaker, and modern dry joints on cables to reduce maintenance. These upgrades aim to improve energy reliability and protection grading across the power network.
The substation now has the capacity to maintain electricity supply even during transformer outages, reducing disruptions for major industrial players like BMW South Africa and Nissan South Africa.
Security has also been improved with surveillance systems, supported by private-sector partnerships. South African Breweries and BMW contributed to funding the new equipment.
Spokesperson Lindela Mashigo confirmed that this is the first phase of a long-term restoration plan beginning in 2025 / 26, which will align the substation with modern safety standards, including arc protection for 11 kV boards.
Plans also include integrating renewable energy solutions, part of a broader embedded generation strategy for sustainable industrial growth in Rosslyn.
