Schneider Electric and Tata Power Partner for SF6-Free Power Distribution
Schneider Electric partners with Tata Power to deploy SF6-Free RMUs using RM AirSeT technology, advancing sustainable power distribution in India.

New Delhi, India: Schneider Electric has secured a landmark contract from Tata Power Company Limited, Mumbai, to deploy 1 kV SF6-Free Ring Main Units (RMUs) using its innovative RM AirSeT technology. This collaboration marks a major step towards sustainable power distribution in India.
Tata Power and Schneider Electric are introducing these RMUs in Mumbai and Delhi as a green alternative to SF6 gas, which, while effective for insulation, has a high global warming potential. SF6 emissions are a key concern due to their severe environmental impact. The project is expected to cut Tata Power’s carbon footprint by up to 75 % compared to conventional SF6 RMUs while delivering up to 50 % cost savings over the equipment’s lifespan.
Deepak Sharma, Zone President, Greater India & MD & CEO, Schneider Electric, emphasized: “This initiative enhances power reliability while aligning with India’s 2070 net-zero targets. Our RM AirSeT units reflect our commitment to sustainability and innovation.”
Sanjay Banga, President, Transmission & Distribution, Tata Power, added: “This partnership highlights our focus on sustainable power distribution. By introducing SF6-Free RMUs in Mumbai and Delhi, and later in Odisha, we are driving efficiency and reducing carbon emissions.”
Dr. Nilesh Kane, Chief Distribution (Mumbai), Tata Power, stated: “We are proud to lead Mumbai’s sustainability efforts by being the first to adopt SF6-Free technology.”
The RM AirSeT system replaces SF6 with pressurized air, ensuring durability and high performance. This partnership sets a new standard for India’s power sector, reinforcing Tata Power’s leadership in green energy solutions.
