UK, Southampton: Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) has completed a $10.5 M (£8 M) infrastructure upgrade in Southampton, enhancing electricity supply for more than 7,500 customers and supporting the city’s low-carbon goals.
Delivered in partnership with Freedom Group of Companies Ltd, the 16-month project involved the construction of a new substation equipped with two modern transformers and the undergrounding of nearly 7 km of cable between North Baddesley and Rownham. The work increases network capacity by 47.8 MVA, enabling greater uptake of electric vehicles, solar panels, and heat pumps across the region.
The upgraded system provides a more resilient and flexible network, reducing the risk of power cuts and future-proofing against extreme weather.
“In addition to contributing to Southampton’s low-carbon targets, rerouting the overhead lines underground has improved the local landscape,” said Tim Eccleston, SSEN Project Manager. “The extra capacity will help homes and businesses switch to cleaner energy and transport options.”
